Besides shoes, what other things should I consider as a new runner?
Step right up. At Runner’s World, we all started running like you, and we’re here to help. We have our How to Start Running program, which provides expert advice, fueling, and gear recommendations. We also have beginner training plans that outline the steps to start so you won’t burn out fast your first couple weeks of running.
How do I determine is I should run in a specific shoe, i.e., max-cushioned, lightweight, stability, etc.?
I can’t stress enough that you should head to your local running store or outlet before committing to a pair of shoes. You won’t know if a shoe is for you until you try them on and go for a test run on a store’s treadmill, floor, or patch of sidewalk outside. You can get your feet scanned and evaluated and sit with a small pile of shoeboxes to narrow down which pair you should take home.
If you have an injury history or other foot problems, you should enlist the help of specialist, like a podiatrist or orthopedist, before choosing shoes or even starting any workout regimen.
What other gear do I need as a new runner?
The gear a runner needs is dependent on the individual, where they run, the weather they run in, how long and how short their runs are, among other considerations. Some things you can go without, others you may need but don’t know where to start. Allow us to be your guide.
We have so many recommendation to offer, from rain jackets to running shorts, watches to hydration bottles. We also have guides on how to layer and winter gear. We offer expert advice on each product to help you determine if it’s a perfect fit for your running style.
