What’s better than one layer of On’s CloudTec cushioning? What’s better than two layers? That’s right, the Cloudmonster 3 has a triple layer of CloudTec cushioning underfoot to soften every stride. CloudTec is the official name for On’s proprietary pods that make their shoes stand out from the rest. Instead of a single, uniform layer of cushioning, each pod compresses during landing and pops back up during takeoff, creating a springy ride.
“My favorite is back! The Cloudmonster 3 has a nice, chunky outsole with big pods that’s a fun mix of cushioned and responsive,” says Kate. “It has a very dynamic feel underfoot due to the rocker shape and the sensation of rolling across the pods with each step. No matter my pace, I love the way it rocks me forward and stays firm and supportive. It’s also really fun to run in when picking up the pace for some speedwork.”
A nylon plate is embedded inside the Cloudmonster’s midsole, which On calls their Speedboard. This plate works in conjunction with the CloudTec cushioning, flexing as you take off to propel you forward. I don’t think this shoe offers a dramatically propulsive ride, but it definitely has more energy than my average daily trainers. However, it’s quite a bit firmer than I’d like, so I haven’t found myself reaching for it as of late.
“The ride and cushioning remind me a lot of the Cloudsurfer Max. It’s firm and stable,” Tom agrees. “But it also feels forgiving underfoot, and the taller stack height works well for longer runs and long days on my feet. Where it separates itself from the Cloudsurfer Max is in the forefoot. It has a touch of extra spring in the toe that makes it easier to pick up the pace, making it a better option as an all-rounder that can do a bit of everything.”
